| The railway from Aviemore through Boat of Garten and Grantown to Forres is part of the original Highland Railway and was closed in October 1965 under the "Beeching Plan". The Strathspey Railway Company was formed in 1971 and was successful in reopening the route to Boat of Garten in 1978. Services were extended to Broomhill, location for station scenes in "Monarch of the Glen" in 2002. In time it is intended to extend the railway back into Grantown. The railway has a small full time staff but is essentially run on a volunteer basis by members of the Strathspey Railway Association. | |
